I woke up around 08:00, having not quite yet fully adjusted to the time difference. I got ready for the day and then talked to my parents on Skype. After hearing how things were going at home, I got breakfast and read a book until it was time for the 11:45 shuttle. I and several others who do not have classes on Monday mornings boarded the bus and headed off. We arrived at UDCI around 11:50, and everyone else who didn’t have 12:00 English got on. We left UDCI around 12:00, and went to lunch.
Lunch is on the fourth floor of one building of a hotel complex at Moon Bay. Moon Bay is a small crescent-shaped bay off of Dushu Lake. We walk through a seating area to a large open space where there is a buffet. We usually find tables to sit at in the smaller seating area on the opposite side of the buffet area. We drop off our things and head for the buffet. Everyone grabs a tray (which has a rubber section in the middle to prevent plates from slipping), a plate, and a set of chopsticks. Then we head to the buffet. We go along the line looking at the English translations of the dishes’ names and at the dishes themselves, and we pick up what we recognize or what looks good. There is usually some kind of fish, and often dishes of chicken and beef. There is always a dish or two of vegetables. At the end of the buffet, there are always sticky buns, rice, and potatoes. There are also always pieces of a dessert cake and some kind of fruit. Another standard is the station in the back of the buffet area, which has an espresso machine, a juice dispenser (apple, berry, orange, and pear), and a place where bowls of noodles and green vegetable in a broth are made and distributed.
The bus leaves lunch at 12:45, arriving back at UDCI around 12:55. those of us with afternoon classes disembark and head to the lounge to do homework, hang out, or work on other things.
Jason, Lauren, Gonzalo, and I all have thermodynamics at 14:00. We (except for Jason, who is Chinese) quickly learned that Chinese professors do not do “St. Syllabus Day”. In fact, they hardly do a syllabus at all, instead choosing to mention pertinent information, such as grading policy and summarized course breakdown, as the first part of their first lecture. I think that we wouldn’t have gotten a syllabus at all if UDCI hadn’t made the Chinese professors make them.
After thermo we returned home to hang out. I and some others have a very light course load this half of the semester (two classes, totaling six credits, that we will be taking the whole semester). In the evening, after dinner, a group of us went to further explore Times Square. We walked around for a short while, and found a KTV, which is a chain of karaoke bars. After exploring a nearby mall where we ate dinner, we went home and went to bed.
